Description

The Offices of the President, the Provost, the Vice President for Research, the College Deans, the Vice President for Student Affairs, and the Division of Professional Studies have partnered with the Graduate School to sponsor a Graduate Student Mental Wellness Symposium on Friday, September 27, from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm in the UC Ballroom. The goal of the Symposium is to facilitate frank, open discussion about the issues nationally and at UMBC, and to identify steps that we can begin to take to promote graduate student mental wellness.

The Keynote speaker is Dr. Elizabeth Klonoff, Professor of Psychology and Vice President for Research and Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at the University of Central Florida (UCF).  Dr. Klonoff has led initiatives to understand and address graduate student mental wellness at UCF and has presented her results at the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) Annual Meeting. Here is a link to her bio http://www.fsec.ucf.edu/en/about/pab/bio-klonoff.htm.  Dr. Hironao Okahana, Associate Vice President, Research & Policy Analysis, the Council of Graduate Schools; Dean's Fellow, the Graduate School, UMBC will share national perspectives on these issues.

The symposium will focus on three areas that impact graduate student wellness: financial insecurity, lack of belongingness and issues with thesis/dissertation. We will hear from experts during the plenary sessions and will go into more depth during breakout sessions over lunch.
